AmeriCorps VISTA
Thursday, May 17th, 2007

Up to 200 AmeriCorps VISTA members will be dispatched to the New Orleans area in about three weeks to staff free or low-cost summer camps and help rescue organizations still recovering from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. GNOAP is proud to be part of this effort working with local providers to place volunteers and coordinate their work in our community this summer. Citywide Blueprint

In January 2007 we were excited to host Public/Private Ventures our national strategic planning partners from Philadelphia. During their visit we convened local afterschool stakeholders to assess current assets and gaps in the Greater New Orleans’ afterschool landscape and began planning to structure a coordinated citywide program for afterschool development. New Orleans Public Schools

New Orleans Public Schools are being adminstered through the state’s Recovery School District, Orleans Parish School System, Algiers Charter School Association, and various independent school charters. Visit the Louisiana Department of Education or the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center for the most current basic school facts and registration instructions.


Recovery School District registration

The New Orleans Recovery School District has begun registration for Fall 2006, today, July 10,2006. Students may be registered for any Recovery School District school at the following sites:

  • Banneker Elementary, 421 Burdette Street, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Henderson Elementary, 1921 L.B. Landry Avenue, Tuesdays until 7 p.m.
  • Clark High School, 1301 N. Derbigny Street, Saturdays, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Registration forms and information is available toll-free at 877.453.2721 or online at www.nolapublicschools.net.

Registration information for Orleans Parish School System, Algiers Charter School Association, and independent charter schools is available in our Resource Library.


Afterschool and Community Enrichment

Beginning this Fall, the Afterschool Partnership is proud to announce the creation of ACE, Afterschool and Community Enrichment. This program is designed to enable and support public schools in offering a variety of high-quality programs that support academic instruction, enrich the development of the whole child outside the regular school day, and expand the services offered within the community. ACE sites for Fall 2006 will be announced in the coming weeks…stay tuned!

The Greater New Orleans Afterschool Partnership has welcomed a new Director! Gina Warner joined the Partnership early this year and is currently working with Susan Sellers to facilitate a smooth transition as Susan moves on to work with the Greater New Orleans Nonprofit Knowledge Works.

The Greater New Orleans Afterschool Partnership’s monthly meetings are currently on hiatus. We continue to work with partners individually and hope to re-establish regular meeting times in the coming months.
